Short overview of activities in Estonia (3rd mobility)

ESTONIA – NATURE’S HOME

Part of the Comenius partnership ECO IS ECHOING – Ecosystems in Europe, our visit to Estonia at the beginning of October 2010 was a great opportunity to meet new people and to become accustomed with the Estonian diverse and untouched nature.

Estonia fascinated us with its rich history and diverse culture, rooted in centuries of tradition, much of which is still in evidence today.

Pärnu, Estonia’s best known seaside resort, Estonia’s “summer capital”, welcomed us on a beautiful autumn day. The first day of our journey was very busy, but full of wonderful surprises: the concert and the meeting at school with the Estonian teachers and students, the visit to the Academic institutions, the tour of Pärnu and the funny evening at the Waterpark fulfilled our day.

But the most important part of our stay in Estonia was the visit to Soomaa National Park, which has been established to preserve nature’s unique value. This is the place where the land meets the sea; bogs are interspersed with virgin forest, fields and fish – rich rivers and lakes.

The third day of our trip taught us that this small but beautiful country is one of the world’s best bird - watching destinations due to its prime fly – way location; in every spring, millions of water fowl which nest in the Arctic pass through Estonia and take time for a short stopover on coastal marshes.

Well, after all these, we thought we had seen everything. But the next days were as fabulous as the first ones: Tartu, the country’s second largest university city, proved to be a pleasant plan to visit, tranquil and with a unique spirit, bisected by a river, with leafy parks and streets lined with 19th century wooden houses.

Then Estonia’s capital, Tallin – which is Europe’s oldest capital – and its Old Town is one of Europe’s best preserved walled mediaeval cities.

As you can see, I am tempted to talk mostly about our visits to different locations. But our project meetings proved to be at least as interesting and useful as the visits. Our friends from Spain, Turkey and of course our beloved hosts, shared their ideas, thoughts and future plans with us and all together, we decided to continue the Comenius project in the same note of responsibility, common interest and true friendship. Each team presented the activities developed so far and the outcome of those activities, learning ones from the others and making future plans together.

The two Romanian students, hosted in their Estonian friends’ families, not only shared this multicultural experience they will hardly ever forget, but also had the opportunity to use the language they learn at school for real communication. They got on well with the students from Spain, from Turkey as well as with the hosts; they enthusiastically participated in all the activities organized.

“It was a unique and unforgettable experience.” – Maria, aged 14, student.

“One day I will come back with my family and my friends.” – Radu, aged 14, student.

“I have never seen such beautiful places and such hospitable people.” – Marina, teacher.

“I was fascinated by everything that happened around me and I will tell everybody that nature in Estonia never fails to amaze.” – Doina, teacher.

Good-bye, Estonia, Welcome, Spain!
