Short overview of activities in Turkey (2nd mobility)

A team consisting of five, teachers and students from our school - Scoala Generala Nr. 4, Bistrita, Romania - had the great opportunity to go on a visit to Istanbul, Turkey, as part of the activity programme of the project, in May (23rd-30th) 2010.

Our hosts focus on the urban ecosystem, trying to keep specific areas in the city clean, to make people conscious of the importance of a clean and healthy environment or even to alert authorities regarding pollution and unauthorized constructions in some areas.

All the participants, students and teachers from the countries involved in the project arrived in Istanbul on May 23rd; Monday, May 24th was dedicated to sightseeing around the host-school area, to visiting the specific places which our Turkish partners take care of-in terms of ecological practice. We had the chance to see vast areas where former forests have become block districts, or shopping centres, sometimes despite the protests of all those concerned in preserving green areas in the city. The visit to the local Forest Police and Local Sanitation, where we could see the recycling process step by step were extremely interesting experiences, both for the children and grown-ups.

The next days were equally rewarding, as we had the chance to discuss environmental issues with representatives of the Local Education Authority, to visit Erkut Soyak Highschool and Cumrihet Kindergarten, where we could share our thoughts and experience with the teachers and admire students’ work - mostly objects made during their Technology and Art Classes out of recyclable materials; we saw them “in action”, during classes and extracurricular activities. On Thursday, May 27th, all of us were particularly impressed by a beautiful School Music Festival at Sevgy Cicegy Primary Festival Hall, where the guest-students were invited to show their talents, too.

Visiting the famous historical places in Istanbul, the Atasehir Botanical Gardens or the Rahmi M. Koc Museum (a private industrial museum, dedicated to the history of transport, industry and communications) as well as the Miniaturk Park - the world’s largest miniature park which contains 105 miniature versions of famous palaces and other buildings - were also very enriching experiences.

The visit provided a great opportunity for all of us to share experience and ideas on environment preservation, a main condition for surviving and leaving a better world to the generations yet to come.

Good-bye, Turkey, Welcome, Estonia!
